Karuna Thurman, putri Robert Thurman dan Nena Thurman, lahir di Boston,
Massachusetts, pada 29 April 1970. Uma dibesarkan di Amherst,
Massachusetts, tempat ayahnya bekerja di Amherst College. Dia
meninggalkan sekolah asrama di usia 15, ketika bertekad untuk menjadi
seorang aktris. Dia pindah ke New York untuk mengikuti mimpinya.
Peran
terobosannya adalah ketika ia bermain sebagai Cecile de Volanges di
Liaisons Dangerous (1988). Lebih banyak perhatian datang dengan NC-17
rated Henry & June (1990), tapi peran Thurman dalam film klasik
milik sutradara Quentin Tarantino Pulp Fiction (1994) -lah yang
memberikannya gelar nominasi Oscar untuk Aktris Pendukung Terbaik.
Setelah peran-peran dalam The Truth About Cats & Dogs (1996) dan Ted
Demme film Beautiful Girls (1996), Thurman bertemu calon suaminya Ethan
Hawke di set Gattaca (1997). Thurman juga memenangkan penghargaan
Golden Globe untuk perannya di film televisi Hysterical Blindness
(2002) (TV), disutradarai oleh Mira Nair.
Ia kembali ke sorotan
utama ketika Thurman berperan dalam film Quentin Tarantino,Kill Bill:
Vol. 1 (2003), sebuah film tentang balas dendam. Dia juga muncul dalam
film John Woo yaitu Paycheck (2003) pada tahun yang sama. Ia
mengumpulkan pujian kritisi atas karyanya di Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (2004)
dan dipuji sebagai Tarantino's muse. Thurman berkumpul kembali dengan
Pulp Fiction (1994) partner yaitu John Travolta dalam film Get Shorty
(1995) ayng merupakan sekuel Be Cool (2005) dan mendapat peran dalam
film The Producers (2005) setelah Nicole Kidman mundur dari proyek.
